LIFE STORIES

I was smiling, waiting for my husband to finally tell me why he had brought me to such an expensive restaurant. But He

spent the entire evening silently staring at his phone. Then he handed it to me and said, “Read the last message… Then

tell me If you still want to go home with me.”  😱💔

Something felt strange from the very beginning.

My husband, Daniel, came home from work earlier than usual. He was wearing a black shirt, his hair was neatly styled, and

he had even put on the cologne he normally saved for special occasions.

“Get ready quickly,” he said. “We’re going somewhere.”

“What’s the occasion?”

“You’ll find out when we get there.”

I thought he might want to celebrate our twelfth wedding anniversary. It was still two weeks away, but Daniel sometimes

liked surprising me. As we were leaving, my mother, Margaret, was sitting in the living room watching television. She had

been staying with us for the past three months because the renovations on her house still weren’t finished.

When she saw me in my elegant dress, she smiled.

“Enjoy your evening. Don’t come back too early.”

At the time, I didn’t notice that Daniel didn’t even respond to her.

The restaurant was one of the most expensive places in the city. We were seated beside a window, a candle was lit on the

table, and the waiter poured us wine. I couldn’t stop smiling.

“Well?” I asked. “Are you finally going to tell me what we’re celebrating?”

Daniel opened his mouth, but then his phone vibrated. He read the message and quickly turned the screen away.

“Is it work?” I asked.

“No.”

“Then who is it?”

“Just wait a little longer.”

For the first twenty minutes, he barely spoke. Every time I tried to start a conversation, another message arrived. His

expression grew more tense with each one.

At first, I felt hurt. We had already grown distant over the past few months. Daniel often came home late, and sometimes he

stepped outside to talk on the phone. I pretended not to notice.

For a moment, I wondered if there was another woman. Maybe that was why he had brought me here. A beautiful

restaurant, quiet music, expensive wine—and a confession that would destroy our marriage.

“If you have something to tell me, just say it,” I whispered.

Daniel looked at me, but remained silent.  Just then, his phone lit up again. This time, I managed to see the sender’s name.

Rose. My heart tightened.

“Who is Rose?”

Daniel placed his phone on the table.

“It’s complicated.”

“How long have you known her?”

“About three months.”

Three months. That was exactly when Daniel had started behaving strangely.

“You’ve been secretly talking to another woman for three months?”

“She isn’t a woman, Laura. She’s a seventeen-year-old girl.”

I froze.

“What?”

“Please don’t jump to conclusions yet.”

“What business does a seventeen-year-old girl have with my husband?”

Daniel reached for my hand, but I pulled away.

“Is she your daughter?” I asked.

He didn’t answer. To me, his silence was confirmation.

Our entire life together began collapsing before my eyes. The fertility treatments, the years of hope and disappointment, the

empty nursery we had finally forced ourselves to close… And now it seemed Daniel might have had a daughter all along.

“You brought me here to confess?” I said. “And she’s messaging you right now?”

“Rose isn’t my daughter.”

“Then whose daughter is she?”

Daniel looked at his phone. Another message had arrived. This time, his hands were visibly trembling. He opened it, read it

for a long moment, and then turned the phone toward me.

“Read the last message,” he said. “Then tell me if you still want to go home with me.”

The message on the screen read: The continuation read in the comments ‼️👇‼️👇

“We received the final DNA test results. The match has been confirmed. Rose is not Daniel’s daughter. She is Laura’s

biological daughter. And we found the signature of the woman who authorized the child’s adoption seventeen years ago.”

I read the message several times. The words made no sense.

“This is some sick joke,” I whispered.

Daniel placed an old photograph on the table.

It showed me at seventeen, lying in a hospital bed. A date had been written on the back in my mother’s handwriting.

A date I had never forgotten.

I had become pregnant when I was seventeen. My mother had kept everything secret, even from my father. After I gave birth, I was told that my daughter hadn’t survived.

I never even got to see her.

I had carried that pain inside me for years.

“But my mother said she died.”

Daniel opened a photograph of a document on his phone.

At the bottom of the page were my mother’s full name and signature.

“Rose contacted me three months ago,” he explained. “She was searching for her biological mother. She found your old address in the adoption records. I didn’t believe it at first either, so I secretly arranged the tests. I didn’t want to give you false hope.”

“Did my mother know?”

Daniel took a heavy breath.

“She didn’t just know. She signed the papers. She told you the baby had died, but three days later, your daughter was given to another family.”

Suddenly, I remembered what my mother had said before we left.

“Don’t come back too early.”

She knew why Daniel was taking me to the restaurant.

“Where is Rose now?”

Daniel’s eyes filled with tears.

“She’s in a hotel two streets away from our house. She wants to meet you, but she’s afraid you’ll reject her.”

I could no longer hear the restaurant music or the people talking around us. For seventeen years, I had mourned my child, never knowing she was growing up somewhere else, believing her mother had abandoned her.

“Why did you ask whether I wanted to go home?”

Daniel stared at me for a long moment.

“Because your mother is waiting there now. She thinks we’ll come back after dinner, listen to her explanation, and continue living as though none of this ever happened.”

I looked at the phone and saw Rose’s photograph for the first time.

She had my eyes.

My smile.

And the small birthmark on her neck that every woman in our family had.

I picked up my purse and stood.

“Where are we going?” Daniel asked.

I wiped away my tears and looked at him.

“Not home.”

“Then where?”

“Take me to my daughter.”

That night, I didn’t return to the house where my mother was waiting to justify her old secret.

I went to meet the girl whose loss I had mourned for seventeen years.

When Rose opened the door to her hotel room, we simply stared at each other for several seconds.

Then she asked in a trembling voice:

“You truly didn’t know I was alive?”

I shook my head.

Rose took a step closer.

“Then you didn’t abandon me?”

At that moment, I realized that I wasn’t the only person who had been deceived.

They had also forced a little girl to spend her entire life believing that her mother had never wanted her.

I wrapped my arms around her and whispered:

“I never abandoned you. I simply didn’t know where to look for you.”
