My husband brought a stranger home and asked me to let him stay for just one night. The next morning, I overheard their
secret conversation in the kitchen and realized that this man had not appeared in our lives by accident. đ¨đ
That evening, I returned from work later than usual.
It was raining, and the streets were almost deserted. When I opened the door to our apartment, I heard the low voices of two
men coming from the kitchen.
My husband, Daniel, rarely invited anyone into our home. He did not even like it when my relatives visited without warning
us first. But that evening, a stranger was sitting at our kitchen table.
He was around fifty years old, thin, with a tired face. He wore old trousers, and his shirt was soaked from the rain. A bowl of
hot soup had been placed in front of him. Daniel stood up and smiled nervously.
âThis is Michael. Heâs going to stay with us tonight.â
I looked at my husband in confusion.
âI met him on the road. He has nowhere to stay.â
Daniel answered too quickly, as if he had prepared the explanation in advance. Michael raised his head.
âI wonât cause you any trouble. Iâll leave early in the morning.â
His voice was calm, but there was something heavy in his eyes. He looked around our kitchen as if he had been there before.
I did not want to seem cruel. We had a small spare room, and the rain outside was getting heavier.
But throughout dinner, I noticed several strange things.
Michael knew where we kept the glasses. When he wanted water, he opened the correct cabinet without asking. Then his
eyes stopped on the small wooden clock beside the window.
âDoes it still work?â he asked.
I froze. That clock had belonged to Danielâs late father. We had never shown it to anyone. Daniel quickly interrupted.
âHe has probably seen a similar clock before.â
Michael fell silent. That night, I could not sleep for a long time. Daniel was lying beside me, but I could tell that he was also
awake. After midnight, I heard footsteps in the hallway.
I opened the bedroom door slightly and saw Michael standing in front of a family photograph hanging on the wall. In it,
Daniel was ten years old, standing beside his mother and father. Michael lifted his hand toward the photograph but did not
touch it. His eyes were filled with tears.
âWhat are you doing here?â I asked.
He turned around abruptly.
âI was looking for water.â
âThe water is in the kitchen. You were looking at my husbandâs childhood photograph.â
He remained silent for several seconds.
âYour husband looks very much like his father.â
After saying that, he walked into the spare room and closed the door. I immediately woke Daniel.
âWho is that man?â
âI told you. I met him on the road.â
âYouâre lying. He knows where things are kept in our house. He knew your father, and you havenât taken your eyes off him all
evening.â The continuation read in the comments âźď¸đâźď¸đ
Daniel sat on the edge of the bed.
âHeâll leave tomorrow. Please donât ask him anything until then.â
âWhy?â
âBecause some truths destroy more than lies do.â
That was the only answer he gave me.
The next morning, their voices woke me. Danielâs side of the bed was empty. It was not even six oâclock yet. I quietly
approached the kitchen. The door was slightly open.
âYou promised she would never find out,â Daniel whispered.
âIâve been silent for twenty-three years,â Michael replied. âYou asked me to stay away, and I did. But now I donât have much
âYou have no right to turn her life upside down.â
âShe is my daughter. At least once, I want to hear her call me Dad.â
It felt as though the floor had shifted beneath my feet. I pushed open the door and walked inside. Both men fell silent.
âWhose daughter are you talking about?â
Danielâs face turned pale. Michael slowly rose from his chair and looked directly at me.
âYou.â
I laughed, but my voice was trembling.
âThatâs impossible. My father died when I was three.â
Michael pulled an old envelope from his bag. Inside were hospital documents, a photograph of my mother when she was
young, and a letter with my name written on it.
He explained that he and my mother had loved each other when they were young. When my mother became pregnant, her
family opposed their relationship. They told Michael that the baby had not survived. Meanwhile, they convinced my mother
that Michael had abandoned her. Years later, he learned the truth and tried to find me.
âHow is Daniel connected to all of this?â I barely managed to ask.
Daniel lowered his head.
It turned out that Michael had found him before our wedding. He had only asked to meet me once. But at the time, my mother was seriously ill. Daniel feared that the truth would destroy both her and me.
He gave Michael money and forced him to leave.
âYou decided for me who was allowed to be in my life?â I shouted. âAnd you hid this from me for twenty-three years?â
Danielâs eyes filled with tears.
âI thought I was protecting you.â
âNo. You were protecting your comfortable life.â
Michael placed his hand on the table to keep himself from falling.
Only then did I notice how weak he was.
He admitted that he was seriously ill. The doctors had given him only a few months to live. That was why he had comeânot to ask for money, a home, or forgiveness, but simply to see me.
I did not know what to feel. A stranger stood in front of me claiming to be my father. Beside me was the man I had trusted with every secret in my life, yet he had hidden the most important truth from me.
Michael picked up his bag.
âIâve seen you now. Thatâs enough.â
He moved toward the door, but I stopped him.
âWait.â
He turned around.
I could not call him Dad. Not yet. But I could not allow him to disappear again either.
âBreakfast isnât ready yet,â I said. âAnd you promised you wouldnât leave until morning.â
Tears streamed down Michaelâs face.
Daniel tried to approach me, but I took a step back.
That morning, the three of us sat around the same small table. But nothing would ever be the same again.
Later, a DNA test confirmed Michaelâs story.
But the greatest shock was still waiting for me.
On the final page of the letter, my mother had written:
âIf Michael ever finds you, know that Daniel learned the entire truth before our wedding. I asked him to tell you after my death. If he remained silent, then he did it not to protect you, but because he was afraid of losing you.â
At that moment, I realized that my father had not returned to destroy my family.
He had returned to expose the secret upon which my entire marriage had been built.
