On the morning of my birthday, I found a hundred red roses outside my door—The message on the card made me call the
police immediately 😱🌹
The doorbell rang at six o’clock on the morning of my birthday.
My wife, Sarah, was still asleep. I put on my robe and went downstairs, thinking that one of our neighbors might need help.
But when I opened the door, no one was there.
Instead, the entire porch was covered with red roses. Large, expensive bouquets had been arranged in two rows, almost
completely blocking the steps.
At first, I smiled. I assumed it was a surprise from Sarah. I was turning forty-six that day, and she loved arranging unexpected
gifts for me.
Then I noticed a black envelope attached to one of the bouquets. Inside was a small white card.
“Happy birthday, Thomas.
Enjoy this day. Next time, these roses will be placed beside your photograph.
With love, Emily.”
My entire body went cold when I read the name.
Emily Carter was my former girlfriend. We had met in college and had been together for almost four years. Our breakup had
been painful. I had accused her of cheating on me, while she insisted until the very end that she was innocent. I hadn’t seen
her in eighteen years.
I turned around. Sarah was standing behind me, reading the card over my shoulder. I explained that Emily was my former
girlfriend but that we hadn’t spoken in years.
“Then why is she saying that next time the roses will be beside your photograph?”
I had no answer.
At first, I thought Emily was simply trying to frighten me. But then I found a photograph of myself tucked inside one of the
bouquets. It had been taken only two days earlier in the parking lot outside my office.
That was when I called the police.
The officers took the card and photograph, then asked to see the footage from our security camera. At 4:17 a.m., a dark-
colored car had stopped in front of our house. A man wearing a cap got out, returned to the car several times, and placed the
bouquets outside our door one by one. Sarah recognized him first.
“Thomas… that’s Daniel.”
Daniel was my younger brother.
I replayed the footage several times, hoping we were mistaken. But the car, the jacket, and the way he walked all belonged
to him. I called him immediately. He didn’t answer.
I sent him a message saying that I had seen the recording and that if he didn’t call me within ten minutes, I would go to his
house with the police. My phone rang two minutes later.
“I can’t explain anything over the phone,” he said. “Search the third bouquet. There’s something inside it.”
His voice was trembling. I went outside and counted the bouquets. Beneath the roses in the third one, I found a small
phone. There was only one video on the screen. Emily appeared in front of the camera. The continuation read in the
She had changed considerably. Her hair was short and her face was thin, but her eyes were still the same.
“If you’re watching this, Thomas, then your brother has finally kept his promise,” she said. “You probably think I’m
threatening you. That’s exactly what I wanted you to think. It was the only way to make you call the police and check the
security camera. I needed both you and the police to see Daniel’s face.”
Emily paused for a moment.
“Eighteen years ago, I did not cheat on you. The photographs, the messages, and the hotel receipt were fake. Your brother
created all of them.”
The day of our breakup flashed before my eyes.
I had received an anonymous envelope containing photographs of Emily. There were also copies of romantic messages and
a hotel bill. I hadn’t even given her a chance to explain. Daniel had been beside me every day during that time. He was the
one who persuaded me not to listen to Emily and to remove her from my life forever.
“While I was working at your father’s company, I discovered that someone was taking money from clients’ accounts,” Emily continued. “It was Daniel. When I told him I was going to tell you, he decided to remove me from your life. He had prepared the documents in your name and threatened to place all the blame on you.”
One of the officers began writing down everything she said.
“I spent years collecting the original documents. Three months ago, I learned that I was seriously ill. I realized I was running out of time. By the time you watch this, I will probably be gone.”
The room fell silent.
One of the officers searched for her name and then looked at me.
“Emily Carter died three months ago.”
At the end of the video, Emily explained that she had placed all the evidence in a bank safe-deposit box. Daniel had the key. She had forced him to promise that he would deliver the roses and the phone on my birthday. Otherwise, her lawyer would send everything directly to the police.
“The roses aren’t for a funeral, Thomas,” Emily said. “They are my farewell to the man I once loved—the man who has spent eighteen years living inside a lie created by his own brother.”
Daniel was found at the airport that same evening. The police discovered a large amount of cash, a new passport, and the key to the safe-deposit box inside his suitcase.
The next day, the police allowed me to be present when the box was opened.
Inside were financial records, copies of bank statements, and transfers bearing Daniel’s signature. But in one corner, there was also a bundle of eighteen letters tied with a blue ribbon.
Every one of them was addressed to me.
Daniel had taken and hidden them over the years.
In the first letter, Emily asked me to meet her. In the second, she tried to explain the truth about the fake photographs. In the fifth, she wrote that she was leaving town because she could no longer live in a place where every street reminded her of me.
Inside the eighteenth and final letter was a photograph of a young woman.
She had long brown hair.
But she had my eyes.
On the back of the photograph, Emily had written:
“Her name is Grace. She has been waiting for seventeen years for you to learn that she exists.”
I sat down on the cold chair inside the bank and couldn’t speak for a long time.
Emily had been pregnant when we separated. She had tried to tell me, but Daniel had taken her letters and forced her to remain silent. He threatened that if she approached me, he would make sure I went to prison for the financial crimes he had committed.
There was a phone number written in one of the letters.
Before calling, I told Sarah everything. I was afraid she would blame me for bringing my past into our home. But after a long silence, she squeezed my hand.
“That girl is innocent. Call her.”
Grace answered on the third ring.
“Hello?”
“Grace, my name is Thomas.”
There was silence on the other end.
“I know who you are,” she finally said.
We met at a small café the following week. Grace arrived with Emily’s older sister. When I walked in, she stood up but didn’t approach me.
I didn’t try to defend myself. I only told her the truth—that I hadn’t known she existed, but I understood that knowing the truth wouldn’t return the years she had lost.
“Mom didn’t hate you,” Grace said. “She only wanted you to know the truth someday.”
We talked for hours. She told me she had been accepted into college and wanted to become an accountant, just like her mother. She showed me childhood photographs and videos Emily had recorded during the final months of her life.
Daniel later confessed to everything. For years, he had been stealing money from our family business. He had removed Emily from my life so that I would never see the evidence she had collected. He also admitted that after leaving the roses and phone outside my door, he had planned to flee the country.
I never visited him in prison.
The red roses remained on our porch for several days. Every time I walked past them, I remembered the words written on the card:
“Next time, these roses will be placed beside your photograph.”
Emily hadn’t been threatening me. She knew that once I learned the truth, the man I had been for the past eighteen years would no longer exist.
My old life truly ended that morning.
But several months later, when Grace came to our home for the first time and baked a birthday cake with Sarah, I understood that Emily’s final act had not only been about revealing the past.
She had given me the opportunity Daniel had stolen from us eighteen years earlier—to finally know my own daughter and try to become worthy of having a place in her life.
